# Commercial Auto Insurance in Maine

Maine sets a $750,000 combined single limit for intrastate commercial motor vehicles under 29-A M.R.S. §1611(2)(G), added by Public Law 2025, chapter 107. Passenger-for-hire schedules still depend on route and seats, and required insurance must stay in force during vehicle registration.[^1]

**Coverage:** [Commercial auto](/coverage/commercial-auto) · [Maine](/coverage/states/maine)

## What Is Commercial Auto?

Commercial auto suits businesses that use vehicles for work and need liability protection; damage to your own vehicles is a separate coverage choice. If employees drive personal or rented cars, check how those trips are handled. [Read the national Commercial auto guide](/coverage/commercial-auto).

## Maine Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Intrastate commercial motor vehicle | $750,000 combined single limit[^1] |
| Passenger-for-hire vehicle, intrastate and interstate | Separate limits by seats and route; see 29-A M.R.S. §1611(2)(B)–(C)[^1] |
| General motor vehicle minimums | 50/100/25 liability; $2,000 medical payments; UM at least 50/100[^2] |

## What to Watch for in Maine

### Use The 2025 Intrastate Commercial Limit

Maine §1611(2)(G), added by Public Law 2025, chapter 107, sets a $750,000 combined single limit for intrastate commercial motor vehicles. Check that the policy and state filing reflect the current statute rather than an older guide.[^1]

### Passenger Limits Depend On Seats And Route

Maine §1611 sets intrastate passenger-for-hire tiers from $125,000 to $2 million by seats, and interstate tiers of $1.5 million for 15 or fewer passengers or $5 million for 16 or more. Tell the broker the seat count, route, and whether a student-transport contract applies; school buses use a separate tier.[^1]

### Cancellation Notice Is Tied To Vehicle Registration

For vehicles subject to §1611, owners must maintain required insurance or bond during registration, and the insurance provider must give the Secretary of State at least 30 days’ cancellation notice. The Secretary may suspend or revoke registration or plates when the required security lapses; arrange a replacement before cancellation.[^1]

### Maine Requires UM And Medical-Payments Protection

The Bureau of Insurance states that motor vehicle owners/operators need $2,000 medical-payments coverage and UM at least 50/100; higher liability limits generally require matching UM unless rejected in writing. Ask how those state requirements are reflected on the commercial form.[^2]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Maine

**Maine Bureau of Insurance.** The Maine Bureau of Insurance licenses producers and companies, enforces Maine insurance laws, and investigates property and casualty complaints including commercial coverage complaints. You can use its state lookup or complaint service to check a license or raise an insurance issue.[^3][^4][^5]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 3% of gross direct premium when Maine is the insured's home state Maine charges 3% of gross direct premium when it is the insured's home state; your broker handles the tax and may include it with the premium. Surplus-lines policies are outside Maine guaranty-association protection. Maine generally requires a diligent search, with an exempt-commercial-purchaser exception requiring broker disclosure and the purchaser's written request.[^6][^7][^8]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Commercial auto; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm that the product is available in Maine; [check the regulator’s license lookup](https://www1.maine.gov/pfr/insurance/node/3) and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

- [Corgi](/insurance-providers/corgi) — **Entity:** Corgi Insurance Services, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Corgi’s company producer-license table lists 50 jurisdictions: 49 states and the District of Columbia, including DC license 3003091619. New Mexico does not appear in the table and is not included here; the omission does not establish that Corgi is unlicensed there. The company-reported table has no stated as-of date and does not establish product availability.[^11]
- [TechInsurance](/insurance-providers/techinsurance) — **Entity:** Specialty Program Group LLC; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** TechInsurance’s current licensing page names Specialty Program Group LLC / SPG Insurance Solutions and lists state license numbers, but labels Rhode Island “Individual licenses” rather than identifying a license for the named agency. RI is omitted because this disclosure does not establish agency authority there; this is a search limitation, not an assertion that the company is unlicensed. The remaining state entries are company-reported and are not an insurance product availability map.[^14]

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Maine

1. Does our Maine operation qualify as intrastate commercial motor vehicle service under §1611(2)(G)?
2. What passenger limit applies based on seats and whether our trips cross state lines?
3. Has the insurer sent Maine’s required cancellation notice and filed replacement evidence?
4. If our liability limit exceeds 50/100, did we select matching UM or reject it in writing?
