# Connecticut BOP insurance: separate inland flood and income coverage

Connecticut’s Insurance Department says flood damage is outside a typical business policy and its August 2024 fact sheet explains the separate commercial flood and business-income decisions. The CID’s address-level tool maps flood, wind and other climate exposures to help businesses inform insurance decisions.[^1][^2][^3]

**Coverage:** [Business owner’s policy](/coverage/business-owners-policy) · [Connecticut](/coverage/states/connecticut)

## What Is Business Owner’S Policy?

A BOP may suit an eligible small business that wants property, liability and lost-income protection together. If you also need auto, workers’ compensation or professional liability, plan for separate coverage. [Read the national Business owner’s policy guide](/coverage/business-owners-policy).

## Connecticut Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Compare the package quote | Compare the BOP’s building, stock, equipment and business-income limits with the flood layers for each Connecticut address using the CID’s property-specific risk tool. Ask for separate commercial flood pricing where the location or contents are exposed, and do not assume a flood policy replaces lost income.[^1][^2][^3] |

## What to Watch for in Connecticut

### Treat inland flooding as a separate quote question

Connecticut CID reported significant damage from the August 18, 2024 rain event and says flood damage is not covered under a typical business policy. Use the CID’s address-level flood and wind mapping, then check the basement or ground-floor stock, tenant improvements and equipment; ask for commercial flood limits and deductible.[^2][^3]

### Separate flood property from business income

CID says basic NFIP flood coverage is for direct physical property damage and that business-interruption loss is excluded; it notes excess coverage may sometimes offer flood-related income protection. Compare building and contents limits, then ask specifically whether any flood-related income or extra expense is available.[^2][^1]

### Review BOP liability and package boundaries

A BOP can package property and liability for an eligible business, but flood, auto, professional services and mobile property may need separate terms. Confirm GL limits against your leases and customer contracts, and compare BOP income limits and waiting periods with the likely repair timeline.[^1][^2]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Connecticut

**Connecticut Insurance Department.** The Connecticut Insurance Department licenses insurance producers and companies, oversees insurers and regulated insurance activity, and investigates insurance complaints. Its complaint and license-search services let you raise an issue or check an insurance professional or company.[^4][^5][^6]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 4% of gross premium when Connecticut is the home state When Connecticut is the insured’s home state, surplus-lines tax is 4% of gross premium; certain state and local government insureds are exempt, and broker or policy fees are not part of the premium-tax base. Connecticut’s required notice says these policies are outside the state guaranty association. Most placements require three declinations or an export-list qualification; an exempt commercial purchaser may qualify for the federal § 8205 search exception after disclosure and a written request.[^7][^8][^9]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Business owner’s policy; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm that the product is available in Connecticut; [check the regulator’s license lookup](https://portal.ct.gov/cid/licensing) and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

- [Corgi](/insurance-providers/corgi) — **Entity:** Corgi Insurance Services, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Corgi’s company producer-license table lists 50 jurisdictions: 49 states and the District of Columbia, including DC license 3003091619. New Mexico does not appear in the table and is not included here; the omission does not establish that Corgi is unlicensed there. The company-reported table has no stated as-of date and does not establish product availability.[^12]
- [ERGO NEXT Insurance](/insurance-providers/next-insurance) — **Entity:** Next First Insurance Agency, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** ERGO NEXT’s current license table lists Next First Insurance Agency, Inc. in 50 jurisdictions, including Washington, DC; New York is excluded because its table rows name Next Insurance Services and AP Intego, not Next First. The table is company-reported; it does not establish product availability or provide state-regulator verification for each entry.[^14]
- [Hiscox](/insurance-providers/hiscox) — **Entity:** Hiscox Insurance Company Inc.; **role:** Insurer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Hiscox’s U.S. company information states that Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is company-reported insurer authority for this entity and does not establish which company issues every Hiscox-branded product.[^13]
- [TechInsurance](/insurance-providers/techinsurance) — **Entity:** Specialty Program Group LLC; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** TechInsurance’s current licensing page names Specialty Program Group LLC / SPG Insurance Solutions and lists state license numbers, but labels Rhode Island “Individual licenses” rather than identifying a license for the named agency. RI is omitted because this disclosure does not establish agency authority there; this is a search limitation, not an assertion that the company is unlicensed. The remaining state entries are company-reported and are not an insurance product availability map.[^15]

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Connecticut

1. What flood-risk maps apply to each Connecticut address, including interior rainfall and basement/ground-floor contents?
2. What building, contents and tenant-improvement limits and deductibles are available on separate commercial flood coverage?
3. Does flood coverage include any business-income or extra-expense benefit, or only direct property damage?
4. What BOP physical loss triggers business income, and what waiting and restoration periods apply?
5. What liability limits and separate auto, professional, inland-marine or umbrella terms fit the business?

## Business Owner’S Policy in Connecticut: FAQ

### Does a Connecticut BOP usually include flood?

Connecticut CID says flood damage is not covered under a typical business policy. Read the actual BOP form and compare separate commercial flood terms for the building, contents and tenant improvements.[^2][^3][^1]

### Will NFIP flood insurance pay for business interruption?

CID says basic NFIP flood coverage pays for direct physical property damage and excludes business interruption. Ask whether an excess or private flood option provides any income protection and how it coordinates with the BOP.[^2]
