# AIG vs Founder Shield: How Do They Compare for Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance?

AIG lists HNOA only for its Manufactured Housing Program, while Founder Shield markets it to businesses with mobile workers and rental exposure.

## Research Scope and Use

Use this comparison to evaluate AIG and Founder Shield for Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance against the same documented criteria. It identifies differences and questions to confirm; it does not select a winner for a particular business. Offering claims are what each provider publishes about this line unless marked otherwise. “Not found” describes the evidence reviewed, not proof that a feature is unavailable. Confirm the insurer, policy wording, limits, retentions, exclusions and cost in an actual quote.

## Summary

AIG’s evidence is program-specific; Founder Shield arranges third-party-carrier HNOA for businesses whose employees use personal or rented vehicles for work. ## What Is AIG?

AIG is the marketing name for American International Group, Inc.; AIG says its insurance products are written or provided by subsidiaries or affiliates. Its U.S. business pages list commercial casualty, property, cyber, management and professional liability, and specialty programs, but a brand-level page does not identify the insurer for a particular policy. ## What Is Founder Shield Insurance?

Founder Shield is a broker for venture-backed startups: you apply online in under 15 minutes, and an advisor shops its 200+ carrier markets to build a program that changes as your products and locations change. It doesn't insure you itself, so ask which insurer carries each policy. ## What Is Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance?

Hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) liability protects the business when rented cars or employees’ own cars are used for work. It does not pay for damage to those vehicles, and it is not a substitute for commercial auto on vehicles the business owns. [11](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm "Commercial Insurance Guide") [12](https://www.hiscox.com/small-business-insurance/business-owner-insurance/non-owned-auto-liability "Non-Owned Auto Liability Insurance") [13](https://nationalgeneral.com/forms_catalog/CA0001_10012013.pdf "Business Auto Coverage Form")

## Key Differences in Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance

### Who the offering is designed to reach

AIG identifies HNOA as a component of its Manufactured Housing Program, naming manufactured-home communities, certain RV parks and dealers. Founder Shield targets businesses with salespeople, delivery drivers, volunteers or other staff using personal or rented cars, including small firms without a fleet. For buyers outside AIG’s named market, Founder Shield’s broker description addresses a wider set of work-driving exposures, subject to carrier underwriting. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance")

### Liability versus vehicle damage

Founder Shield describes liability for third-party bodily injury, property damage and defense costs when an employee’s personal policy denies or limits a business-use claim. It also says the coverage does not repair the hired or non-owned vehicle itself. AIG’s directory confirms the line within its program but does not describe covered damages or exclusions, so obtain its form before comparing scope. [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance") [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance") [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance")

### Broker placement and carrier identity

Founder Shield places coverage with outside carriers and says carrier selection depends on industry; it does not name the insurer until placement. AIG’s record describes program administrator and underwriting resources, but not the insurer for a specific HNOA placement. Ask both who issues the policy, which drivers and vehicle uses are listed, and where to report a claim. [10](https://foundershield.com/about-us/ "About Us") [6](https://foundershield.com/insurance-faqs/general-faqs/how-do-you-decide-which-carriers-to-approach/ "How Do You Decide Which Carriers to Approach?") [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance")

## What to Confirm in Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance Quotes

- Does your business fit AIG’s manufactured-housing audience, and which HNOA terms are shown on the policy?
- Which carrier will Founder Shield place, and does its form exclude physical damage, owned autos or driver injuries?

## Offering Details

| Criteria | AIG Manufactured Housing Program Hired and Non-Owned Auto | Founder Shield Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Role in This Line | AIG’s public directory supports HNOA only as a listed component of its Manufactured Housing Program; it does not establish a broad standalone HNOA policy. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Role in this product is limited to the description on the linked AIG source..) | Founder Shield is a retail insurance brokerage, described on its site as “the innovation arm of The Baldwin Group,” and places Founder Shield Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance with third-party carriers rather than underwriting the policy itself. [10](https://foundershield.com/about-us/ "About Us") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: About-us page; applies to Founder Shield's brokerage model generally, restated here for this line..) |
| Issuing Insurer | Confirm in your quote. | Founder Shield says it places policies, including Founder Shield Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance, only with carriers rated A- or better by AM Best, chosen for the client's industry. It does not name the issuing insurer for this line; that depends on which carrier the policy is placed with. [6](https://foundershield.com/insurance-faqs/general-faqs/how-do-you-decide-which-carriers-to-approach/ "How Do You Decide Which Carriers to Approach?") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: General carrier-selection FAQ, not specific to this line's placements..) |
| Who It’s For | AIG lists hired and non-owned auto only in its Manufactured Housing Program for manufactured-home communities, certain RV parks/destination resorts, retail manufactured-housing dealers and recreational-unit dealers (excluding RV dealers). This is not general HNOA eligibility. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Audience is the segment AIG names on the linked source; this is not an underwriting decision, quote or guarantee of availability..) | Founder Shield markets HNOA to businesses with mobile employees such as salespeople or delivery drivers, companies that rent vehicles, organizations that rely on volunteers, and small businesses without a company fleet. [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: HNOA product page..) |
| Coverage Features | AIG lists Hired and Non-Owned Auto as a coverage component of the named Manufactured Housing Program. The directory does not define covered drivers, vehicles, use, limits or exclusions. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: AIG’s public product description is not the policy. Actual entitlement depends on the applicable issued form, endorsements and declarations..) | Founder Shield says HNOA is a liability-only policy covering third-party bodily injury, third-party property damage and legal defense costs when an employee uses a personal or rented vehicle for business and their personal auto policy denies or limits the claim. [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Product page; the issued policy and declarations control actual coverage..)

Founder Shield notes HNOA does not cover physical damage to the hired or non-owned vehicle itself, accidents involving company-owned vehicles, or injuries to the employee driving (covered instead by workers' compensation). [9](https://foundershield.com/coverage/hnoa-insurance/ "Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: HNOA product page..) |
| Limits and Retentions | No HNOA limit, deductible or covered-auto schedule appears in the directory. Confirm these in the program quote and issued form. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") (Evidence: Not publicly disclosed; scope: This statement reports only what the linked public source discloses and does not substitute for a quote or issued policy..) | Confirm in your quote. |
| Risk Services | AIG describes Program Administrator support, underwriting, claims and loss-control resources for its programs. The page does not state account-level HNOA claims handling or services beyond those program-wide descriptions. [3](https://www.aig.com/home/risk-solutions/business/aig-programs "AIG Programs Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: The linked page describes company-reported support; specific account services and third-party arrangements must be confirmed..) | Confirm in your quote. |
| How to Apply | Confirm in your quote. | You request Founder Shield Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance through Founder Shield's website or an insurance advisor rather than binding coverage directly; Founder Shield says its placement team then approaches carriers on the client's behalf. [10](https://foundershield.com/about-us/ "About Us") [6](https://foundershield.com/insurance-faqs/general-faqs/how-do-you-decide-which-carriers-to-approach/ "How Do You Decide Which Carriers to Approach?") ## AIG Reviews

Review Score: 4.4 / 10 from 2 rated sources, equally weighted.

Customer ratings for AIG are low: Trustpilot shows 1.9 out of 5 from 252 reviews, and NerdWallet gives 2.5 stars and notes more claims complaints than expected. These pages cover many AIG products and countries, so they only loosely describe business insurance.

- NerdWallet: NerdWallet editorial rating 2.5 (stars). NerdWallet’s editorial business-insurance comparison; the AIG entry concerns commercial liability and property insurance, not a quantified policyholder-review sample.
